Welcome to the first newsletter in 2016. Single parent families are becoming more common in today’s society as we are well aware. The qualities that are vital for well-adjusted children are the same in one parent families as in two parent households—support, guidance, quality time and unconditional love. However the outcome greatly depends on the emotional and physical well-being of the parent. Do things you enjoy, join a support group, spend time with friends, go for walks and maintain a positive attitude.
We have some exciting things happening in 2016 for Single Parent Services Waikato and to achieve this, we have just welcomed 2 new social workers to the agency whanau. We introduce you to Selina Koloi and Kopania Wehi. We all look forward to working with you in 2016.

Wow so how was that for the first month of spring! Still a bit chilly but the weather can only get better! I don’t think I have noticed yet or looked hard enough to find some blossoms but I have seen plenty of daffodils at Claudelands park they are just everywhere. Daffodils are such a beautiful flower that bring back childhood memories of making daffodils in school with straws and cup cake cases. Do you remember that?
You will soon notice that when ringing the agency that you will be greeted with a huge welcome to Single Parent Services Waikato which still offers the same services with support from the same wonderful team. So I hope this doesn’t confuse you. Single Parent Services Waikato is still Link House and Birthright Waikato. It is a collaborative project between the two agencies bringing together the best of both agencies to better support the needs of our clients.

We are in the last month of winter and our vegetable garden has beautiful silver beet growing and broccoli starting to appear, there was even a cucumber that managed to grow through the cold wet wintery days which was amazing to see during this time of the year. Speaking of this time of the year we also have had some very exciting things happening in the last couple of months bringing together both Link House Agency and Birthright Waikato to form Single Parent Services Waikato. This has been exciting with the launch of our new Website and Facebook page so please feel free to follow us on Facebook and post commentary that you feel are relevant to other single parents around the Waikato and the rest of New Zealand. Don’t forget to check out what will be happening over the next two months on our Activity Guide and one off events page.

Autumn leaves have fallen and jack frost lands in the most unlikely places so keep safe as we head into winter . The roads are likely to be slippery watch your speed when dropping off and picking up little ones at school and running errands ensure the children keep warm, have dry clothes and footwear to avoid colds and flu. Take time to take care of you also. Warm soups are a quick and non expensive idea so why not give it a go, the children will love you for it. We also have a recipe for Minestrone soup on page 2 or put together you own. From the team at Link House/ Birthright Waikato.

Our children are our most delicate surprises and the most treasured gift in life. As parents we help to wash away the rain in autumn and shelter them from the frost in winter; we assist them to spring like lambs in the spring time and shine like the sun in summer. Whatever the excuse this Easter, celebrate with an egg. Even the smallest of eggs is the biggest of surprises. Try fun things with the chil-dren like an Easter egg hunt or trail. For them, spending fun time with you is the most precious thing so become involved this Easter and watch the smiles grow. From the team at Link House and Birthright Waikato.
